Employee survey design studio

What does the ES design studio offer?

The ES design studio of ISPA consult is the development center in the employee survey field. Its main task is the development of customised questionnaires for employee surveys

  • in individual companies and administrations,
  • in affiliates, and
  • in industrial unions that want to offer their member companies a collective questionnaire with comparable standard questions.

This service is provided for everyone who plans a primary or repeat survey with a new or a newly designed questionnaire. For this process, it is insignificant whether a print or an online survey is planned.

Who are the customers of the ES design studio?

  • First-time interviewers. Developing a questionnaire is difficult without own experience. Among the first-time interviewers are many SMBs which only now discover the advantages of an employee survey. They gladly seek support from external ES experts for time, cost, and quality assurance reasons.
  • Repeat interviewers. The necessary professional competence is not always available or accessible when a completely or largely new questionnaire is to be offered to the target group. The focus does not lie on "repairing" the old but on designing the new questionnaire. The know-how of the ES design studio can help to fulfill the occurring tasks faster, better and, if possible, also more cost-efficiently than without external support.
  • Other repeat interviewers. The ES design studio is gladly used by repeat interviewers who started surveying their head office and now want to include other locations at home and abroad. There is a distinctive trend towards international employee surveys, which make high demands on the questionnaire development. When locations from different culture groups join the survey, which demand to be heard and want to be represented with own topics and individual questions, developing the questionnaire is closely connected to coordination and translation tasks.

How is the questionnaire development organised?

The design process follows the concept of the "interactive supplier-customer relation". Typical procedure:

  1. The customer states which specifications the questionnaire which is to be developed shall have. The ES design studio clarifies missing or imprecise specifications by enquiring.
  2. Supplier (ES design studio) works out a concept for the questionnaire according to given specifications.
  3. The customer's project team uses the draft as basis for discussion and formulates demands for changes or additions.
  4. Supplier (ES design studio) makes changes/additions according to the customer's demands and designs a final version or other drafts to discuss with the customer.
  5. The customer's project team approves the final version and initiates the authorisation procedure.

In a simplified procedure the customer accepts the standard questionnaire from the ES design studio as basis for discussion and takes it on as their own questionnaire with or without changes/additions. The designing process is more complex than what is mentioned above when special wishes and demands from different locations regarding style and content are to be considered adequately.

Which data and instruments are used for the efficient questionnaire development?

  • the experience of our team of experts which is based on the development of far more than 100 developed questionnaires
  • an archive of stored questionnaires from different branches
  • a file with almost 2,000 written out individual questions for all topics that are relevant for an employee survey
  • a multi-point video conference system as an additional time- and cost-saving communication instrument for cultivating the "interactive supplier-customer relation" in addition to the usual multimedia-based communication channels
  • scientific basic literature on theory and practice of the employee survey

How much time does it take to develop a questionnaire?

According to our experience, the development of a questionnaire takes four to five weeks. It can vary, however, between one week (minimum amount of time) and three months (maximum amount of time) exclusive of programming time for online surveys or the time for printing and copying in case of a print survey. This period is also often used for the internal marketing and other preparations for the planned employee survey.
